The Year of the Monkey devised season of original work 2017.

devise  plan or invent (a complex procedure, system, or mechanism) by careful thought.

This year, the Fourth Monkey one year actor training programme, The Year of the Monkey under the guidance of course and company director Charleen Qwaye mark their London production season with two original devised pieces of work under the creative direction of Simone Coxall and Ami Sayers.

Goblin Market directed by Ami Sayers:

'We must not look at goblin men,
We must not buy their fruits'

Laura and Lizzie try to survive in a world full of threats and temptations from sinister Goblin merchants. A physical and visual exploration of Christina Rossetti's famous poem.

Refugee Blues directed by Simone Coxall:

In 1939 WH Auden wrote his poem ‘Refugee Blues’ in response to the Jewish refugee crisis in Europe following the election of Adolph Hitler in Germany. It charts a couple’s increasingly desperate efforts to seek refuge and the reluctance of the USA and UK to accept them or acknowledge a common humanity. Thwarted by intentionally impossible bureaucratic hurdles and with all doors shut to them, they observe a world of closed borders, ineffectual political actions, and the indifference of many to their plight. Auden’s poem is a powerful reminder of the lessons of history and is especially chilling given our knowledge now of the horrific outcome for the European Jews. The resonances with today are abundantly apparent and the arguments startlingly familiar. The voice of this couple speaks for all those who flee persecution and seek a place of refuge.
