What is a Professional Learning Community?

Building a professional learning community, or PLC, recognises that schools must work together to achieve their collective purpose of learning for all. Therefore, they create structures to promote a collaborative culture. The term is also applied to schools that use small-group collaboration as a form of professional development. The three words explain the concept: professionals coming together in a group—a community—to learn.
Professional learning communities tend to serve two broad purposes:

  • Improving the skills and knowledge of educators through collaborative study, expertise exchange, and professional dialogue;
  • Improving the educational aspirations, achievement, and attainment of children through stronger leadership and teaching.
