Dr Frances Holliss will outline the rise of home-based work and the need to design for it at both building and urban scales. She will analyse the failure of ‘live/work’ in the early 2000s and discuss how the rules that govern what we can build lag behind contemporary ways of life, and of inhabiting the city. Identifying a need for structural reform, she will discuss planning and property taxation systems that facilitate design for home-based work in Japan and the Netherlands. She will also discuss an immediate need for creative thinking to prevent the loss of established communities of artists in places like Hackney Wick and Fish Island.
