The Lonely Men of Faith
With Elie Jesner
Tuesdays 1st, 8th, 15th, 29th May
If faith is not about superstitious belief and intellectual dishonesty then what exactly is it? One approach is to view it as an attitude at the core of our mental health, a finely tuned balance of courage, acceptance and optimism. This short course will explore faith through three recent thinkers who delved deeply into such questions: Soren Kierkegaard, Sigmund Freud and Joseph Soloveitchik. We will wrestle with their texts and try to understand them, whilst also considering how such questions might be relevant to our own lives.
Elie Jesner is a psychoanalytic psychotherapist and a Research Fellow at Leo Baeck College. His work and research combine the three worlds of philosophy, psychoanalysis and Judaism. This is reflected in his education - three years at Yeshivat Har Etzion, MAs in Philosophy from Cambridge and Warwick University, 6 years psychoanalytic training at the UKCP recognised Philadelphia Association. He is currently studying towards Semikha at Bet Midrash Harel in Jerusalem.
