The Monkey House
Acting through Clown
Monday evening six week short course
5th February - 12th March 2018
Acknowledging your own ridiculousness and vulnerability is a brave and wonderful thing and it is from this place that we can make beautiful and very funny theatre. Clowning not only teaches the performer to find the games and stay optimistic but also how to be bold and take risks. It is with this resilience the clown can make a genuine and honest connection.
In this six week, highly enjoyable and safe workshop we will:
Discover our own individual clown and how it works
Learn to accept and truly connect with the audience
Become bolder and take greater risks
Learn how to stay light and optimistic even in the darkest moments
Become resilient and trust our impulses
Devise and find ways to create with clown
Rediscover the pleasure of making mistake
Experience the joy of the flop
This workshop is suitable for performers who have no experience in clown, or the very experienced who want to try something new.
This short course will be lead by ‘All in’ Artistic Director Stephen Sobal. Stephen is a multi-award winning director who has studied clown, bouffon and physical comedy with Philippe Gaulier, Aitor Basauri, John Wright, Philip Burgers and Complicité's Jozef Houben. He has taught clown, comedy and theatre skills for many educational and performance based institutions including: Oxford University, Cambridge University, RSC Open Stages, ALRA, Theatre Royal Bath, The Rose Theatre, ICAT, Doreen Bird College, Nine Corner Arts and here at Fourth Monkey Actor Training Company where he is Head of Ensemble for the Year of the Monkey.
