Thought experiments are
exercises of imagination in which philosophers and scientists think through
possibilities, arguments and ideas. From Plato’s cave to the trolley problem,
from Schrödinger’s cat mysteriously suspended between life and death to
Einstein running alongside a beam of light, thought experiments are where
imagination shades into philosophy and science becomes fiction.
This interdisciplinary creative writing workshop explores the possibilities of
this blurred boundary. In it, participants will produce short stories, poems or
dramatic pieces inspired by thought experiments. Attendees can use thought
experiments from their experience, or draw from the many examples from all
fields of study in order to create new, strange and exciting pieces of writing.
This workshop is open to beginners, especially those who study philosophy or
science and who are interested in writing, as well as creative writers of all
levels.
The workshop will be coordinated by Dr Chris Kitson, Postdoctoral Fellow in
English Literature at IASH, Dr Jane McKie, Lecturer in Creative Writing,
University of Edinburgh, and Dr Alasdair Richmond, Senior Lecturer in
Philosophy, University of Edinburgh.
