The Prince of Salina (the Leopard) tries to preserve his family and class amid the tumultuous social upheavals in the harsh Sicilian landscape of the 1860s. Painfully realizing the aristocracy’s obsolescence, the Prince distances himself from the new society that emerges but does not stand in the way of his nephew Tancredi, who swims with the tide and assures his own position.
