Acting Through Song - Saturday 4th April, 10:00 - 17:00

Whether you are auditioning for the lead in a West End musical, or fumbling through a folk song in a play, this workshop will challenge you to get under the skin of a character and build a complex, truthful, evolving performance.

You will explore three crucial elements:

  • Technique - how to work with your body and use your voice more specifically and effectively to tell the story
  • Musicality - how to find acting clues in the music
  • Text analysis and embodiment - how to apply what you already know as an actor to song

The day will start with a physical and vocal warm-up, followed by group work and song analysis. You will then work on individual songs before wrapping up with a discussion and questions.

Please bring two copies of a song you would like to work on.

Please note that this workshop occurs across the entirety of 1 day.

Clara Marullo started out in opera, playing principal roles for Welsh National Opera and Glyndebourne Festival opera, before moving into musical theatre. Roles include Jenny Lind in Barnum, Fantine in Les Miserables, and Emma in the world premiere of Orphans. She has worked in classical and contemporary theatre in the UK and USA, has featured in tv commercials and dramas and is increasingly in demand as a voice actor. Clara recently created The Actors’ Playground – a theatre company combining experienced actors with emerging talent – and is developing a new play Shooting Icebergs.

Clara received a degree in English from Oxford University, before training as a singer at London’s Royal Academy of Music. Over the years, she has deepened her practice via numerous courses and masterclasses in the UK and the USA, plus a recent stint at the Adishakti Laboratory for Theatre Arts in India.
