Come and celebrate Christmas virtually!

There is nothing quite like beer and cheese. As an alternative to their usual Christmas Social, the North London Branch is offering people a chance to see how the complexities of the flavours in beer complement the flavours in cheese. Five different beer styles will be paired with four different cheeses by Master Trainer and judge, Christine Cryne.

The session will cover how to match beer with cheese and go through four different cheeses teamed with five different styles of beer. This fun event starts at 6pm and will last about 90 -120 minutes depending on how many questions are asked.

There is no charge for the session but, if you can afford it, please consider making a donation to CAMRA to help them continue to provide the platform to host these events - even the £2 helps!!!

And to make it even more fun, there will be a prize for the person wearing the best Christmas jumper (or any apparel) on the night!

What participants need for the session

Four cheeses:

            - Goats' cheese

            - Camembert (should be fresh, not aged)

            -  Mature Cheddar

            - Stilton or another blue of your choice

Five beers:

  • Wheat Beer 5%ABV+             - traditional style i.e. not something like Blue Moon, which has American hops
  • Golden Ale 4.5%ABV+            - looking for something gold in colour not amber and with American hops
  • Traditional Bitter 4.5%ABV+  - amber to brown in colour. Keep below 5.5% ABV
  • Porter or Stout 4.5%ABV +     - plain or if flavoured, pick dark fruits such as plums; avoid coffee or chocolate
  • Strong Bitter 6%ABV+            - amber to brown; full flavoured

Participants can choose whatever beer they wish of the above styles, particularly if they wish to support local brewers. If this is problematical, then here are some beers that can be purchased via supermarkets:

  • Wheat Beer: Franziskaner Weissbier, Erdinger Weissbrau Beer, , Weihenstephaner Hefe Weissbier Wheat Beer
  • Golden Ale: St Austell Proper Job, Thornbridge Jaipur IPA,  Oakham Citra
  • Traditional Bitter: Fuller’s London Pride, Marston’s Pedigree, Black Sheep Ale, Shepherd Neame Spitfire, Greene King Abbot,
  • Porter or Stout: Fuller’s London Porter or Black Cab; Guinness West Indies Porter, Sainsbury's London Porter, Asda Whitechapel Porter
  • Strong Bitter: Fuller's 1845, Morland's Old Crafty Hen, Shepherd Neame 1698. Slightly redder but also suitable would be Wychwood King Goblin
