About this event...

On November 11th, The Security Institute will hold our annual Remembrance Event. Although due to the on-going Coronavirus pandemic the event may differ in many ways to years past, the importance of honouring the service and sacrifice of our Armed Forces community remains the same as ever. This event is one of the many ways that the Institute continues to recognise the contributions of our Armed Forces community, the British and Commonwealth veterans, the Allies that fought alongside us and the civilian servicemen and women involved in the two World Wars and later conflicts.

This year we are pleased to announce that we will be joined by Colonel Jeremy Green OBE, who will be delivering a presentation entitled: 'Operation OVERLORD: Britain’s High Watermark'. Colonel Green will be discussing how the OVERLORD operation represents Britain’s high watermark as a world military power, and that contrary to the Hollywood version, the Normandy landings in their planning and leadership, together with the technology that was developed to support it, and the overall strategic deception plan that overlay it, were essentially British both in concept, design and execution.

Colonel Green had a long career serving in the Royal Military Police (RMP), a career that was marked by several ‘firsts’ and a significant ‘last’, and we are very pleased that he has agreed to present for the Institute at this year’s event. He was the first non-privately educated schoolboy to be awarded a scholarship to the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst and went on to be the first of only two RMP Officers to command both the RMP Close Protection Unit and the Special Investigation Branch.  He was sadly the last Officer Commanding of the RMP Mounted Troop.

As a military expert, Colonel Green has contributed to a number of notable projects that have recounted the Normandy Day Landings. For the 75th commemoration of the Normandy Landings, Colonel Green was the historical advisor for the UK’s official ‘Spirit of Normandy’ Commemorative Journal and the expert-in-residence at the Ministry of Defence’s ‘D-Day 75’ National Media Facility at Southwick House. On the 5th June, he spent a morning in the Map Room with Carol Kirkwood for ‘BBC Breakfast’ discussing the weather on D-Day and on the 6th June he appeared in "Storm Front in Mayo", a D-Day related documentary broadcast by RTE-2and chatted with Martha Kearney on BBC Radio 4’s ‘Today’ programme.

Following Colonel Green's presentation, we will then host a Charity Auction for which all proceedings will go to this year's chosen charity: The Not Forgotten Association, which is celebrating its 100th anniversary after proudly supporting veterans since 1920. We do hope you can join us for this year's Remembrance Event from the safety of your own home.
