This training session is aimed at parents of autistic
children or those with social communication challenges.
The session may also be
useful to professionals who work with and support autistic children and their
families.
The session will introduce and explore the following topics:
- Common barriers faced by
autistic children when starting to use the toilet;
- Strategies to help adapt
for and/or overcome these barriers;
- Setting realistic
toileting goals.
Resources (including visuals, books and
equipment examples), activities and practical strategies will be shared with a
focus on how and when to start with toileting as well as specific toileting
problems experienced by this group such as recognising bladder and bowel
sensations, overcoming anxiety about using the toilet and learning how to wipe)
