Overview of the Programme ( Meeting the 5 pillars):
The ‘SEND in the Mainstream’ training is structured around the EEF ‘SEND in the Mainstream’ guidance and the 5 recommendations set out within it to support primary and secondary schools seeking to improve their provision for pupils with SEND. The focus of the training is on improving the quality of teaching and learning in mainstream classrooms and ensuring pupils are full members of the school community who have rich and positive experiences. We recognise the complexities around SEND however the aim is to give an overview of some key ‘best bets’ for improving SEND provision.
During the training various SEND audit tools, including those from Whole School SEND, will be discussed and used as gap tasks to support delegates to (part) audit their SEND provision. The training includes practical tasks including case studies, exploration of research and evidence informed practice. There will be opportunities for discussion and reflection between delegates. Delegates will also be encouraged to share best practice from their own settings in a way to recognise and celebrate much of the good work that is already in practice.
Throughout the training we will explore delegates attitudes and beliefs towards the inclusion of pupils with SEND to enhance the quality of interactions delegates have with pupils.
Session 1: - Create a positive and supportive environment for all learners in line with current legislation
Session 2 - Ensure all pupils have access to high quality teaching. Complement high quality teaching with carefully selected small group and one-to-one interventions
Session 3 - Work effectively with teaching assistants-
Specialist School Provision connectivity and collaboration (Recommendation 5. Making the best use of TA's recommendations
Between each of the sessions there will be gap tasks to enable practitioners to embed ideas between sessions and link theory and practice in their own provision.
What impact will this programme have?
Based on the SEND Data source National Office of Statistics, January 2020, school census data, by the end of Year 11, 44% of pupils had been classified as having SEND at some point in their schooling but only 15% of pupils are considered to have had SEND at any one time. Also, the data from the LAIT focusing on KS2 attainment in RWM for Lincolnshire for pupils with no identified SEND is inline with the national picture but slightly lower than statistical neighbours. However for pupils with identified SEND attainment is lower that national, regional and statistical neighbours. This demonstrates there are training needs within the locality.
The intended impact of this training.is to empower teachers to meet the needs of all leaners they work with. Providing them with the best quality education that meets and identifies individual needs through evidence based high quality teaching. ‘Every teacher is a teacher of SEND’.
