What you need to know

Mona, a 16-year-old environmental activist, has been raised by her older sister since their mother walked out on them. When Mona sees her mother on an online photo of a climate change protest, she sets off to join and campaign with her. Her search takes her on a series of thoughtful encounters with passionate well-meaning characters that want to help her but only serve to thwart her progress.

Amongst the turmoil of conflicting and clashing arguments, a reunion is on the cards. But can she forgive her mother walking out on her and sister or was the cause worth it?

Heavy Weather by Lizzie Nunnery is part of Platform, a new initiative from Tonic Theatre in partnership with Nick Hern Books. Aimed at addressing gender imbalance and inequality in theatre, Platform comprises big-cast plays with predominantly or all-female casts, written specifically for performance by schools, colleges and youth-theatre groups.

Directed by Poppy Rowley and performed by the Fourth Monkey BA Acting Graduating Class of 2022, Heavy Weather is a pertinent timely play of a young girls demanding adventure with the aim of getting people to care.
