Wise Words Festival

Wise Words is a not for profit organisation that aims to inspire wonder and curiosity through offering audiences innovative encounters with poetry and storytelling. We run on tiny budgets and huge amounts of passion fuelled by a belief that poetry offers more than entertainment, It helps us reach across differences, inspires a sense of social responsibility and it bears witness to the complexity of human experience - helping us to imagine a better world.

We keep prices for events very low because we want to ensure the festival remains accessible to the widest possible audience. Any donations will help us extend our work and keep bringing Wise Words back to heart of the city each year.

WiseWords Festival
The heart of the festival lies in Canterbury’s Secret Garden, belonging to the Franciscan Friars – an unexpected haven just a stones throw from the hustle and bustle of the city centre. Thought provoking talks, music, performances, storytelling and poetry take place in a beautiful yurt, tents and in the ancient Franciscan Chapel.  From here activity spills out across the city – onto the streets, in gardens, in coffeehouses and even on the river.

You may stumble across a poet performing whilst you pay for your morning coffee; a storyteller on a punt; lines of verse appearing in shop windows or performance poets on street corners battling for your votes to become the king or queen of the street slam.

Secret Garden, Stour Street, Canterbury, Kent, CT1 2NR United Kingdom

The Franciscan Gardens are more popularly known as Canterbury’s ‘Secret Gardens’ for a good reason. Many people who have lived in Canterbury all their lives have never discovered them. However we are about to let you in on this special secret…

If you turn into Stour Street from the High Street and walk about 100 yards you will come to Greyfriars B&B and beside it big black doors. A bumpy drive takes you across two bridges and into the Secret Gardens. As you cross the bridges peer over the side and you may catch a glimpse a bed of eels.

Transport

Rosemary Lane and Stour Street car parks are both around a 5 minutes walk from the gardens. Both Canterbury East & West railways stations and the main bus station are about a 10 minutes walk.
