What you need to know

Sailing Logic - ISAF Offshore Safety Course

This 2-day course provides training for skippers and crews intending to sail away from protected inshore coastal waters, and who may encounter rough weather and problems at sea.

Day one (Sunday) is classroom based and covers heavy weather sailing techniques, including rigging storm sails and use of sea anchors as well as weather forecasting, fire fighting, MOB rescue and recovery, search patterns, effective communications and a live flare demo (subject to coastguard approval).
Day two (Saturday) incorporates the RYA Sea Survival syllabus including a practical pool based session, with a liferaft. This course will give you the confidence and knowledge to sail offshore safely and with minimal risks to crew and yacht and is highly recommended to all sailors (racing or cruising) venturing away from inshore waters.

If these dates don't suit you, please see our other ISAF dates.

ISAF and Racing Requirements:

The certificate awarded confirms crew eligibility under section 6.01 of the ISAF Special Regulations for category 0, 1 and 2 offshore races (such as the Fastnet, Caribbean 600 or Round Ireland Race) which requires a % of the crew to have taken personal survival training.

The full ISAF Offshore Regulations can be viewed on the ISAF Website.

Format:

Both days start promptly at 9am in our classroom at Port Hamble Marina and finish about 4.45pm. Saturday includes a practical session on a boat rigging storm sails, and a live flare demo (subject to coastguard permission) and Sunday includes a pool session run in a nearby swimming pool (swimwear required).

Exemptions:

If you already hold an RYA Sea Survival Certificate (or approved equivalent) issued within the last 5 years, this will exempt you from Day 2 of the course and you can gain the ISAF Offshore Certificate by just attending on Saturday. However - you MUST bring your RYA Sea Survival certificate with you and, please note, the ISAF certificate will expire once the RYA Sea Survival Certificate is 5 years old.

For example if you did your RYA Sea Survival course three years ago, you can attend just Saturday of this ISAF course which would qualify you for races this year and next. However your ISAF cert will expire in two years and both parts will need to be renewed. Please contact us directly to book just the Saturday part of the ISAF or if you are unsure of your situation.

Please note the STCW95 Sea Survival is not an approved equivalent of the RYA Sea Survival course.

What is included:

Instructor, class room and pool based session, loan of wet-weather gear and life-jackets, light refreshments, RYA Sea Survival Handbook, ISAF Offshore Safety Course Certificate and RYA/MCA Small Craft Basic Sea Survival Certificate (ISAF valid for 5 years).
