This training course is aimed at beer lovers (both experienced and less experienced), who want to understand how the ingredients that go into beer affect the appearance, aroma and flavour.

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • state the four primary flavours
  • demonstrate an understanding as to how different ingredients affect a beer
  • list the four characteristics on how a beer is judged
  • describe three beers using their own words.


In total, 6 beers will be tasted.

At the end of the course, you have the option of gaining a Certificate of Attendance or, after taking a quiz, a Certificate of Competency. The course is independently accredited by People 1st, who are part of the Guild of Hospitality. This course last around 3.5 hours.

No prior experience is necessary. The venue will be upstairs at the White Hart, which is the original home of the One Mile End Brewery.


The course is being conducted by Christine Cryne, who is a Master Trainer, Member of the Guild of Beer Writers and European Beer Consumer Union accredited judge.
