room 1.17 Dugald Stewart Building, University of Edinburgh

Event description

We are delighted to invite you to a presentation by Neil Melhuish, Director of Policy at Netsafe.

Netsafe is New Zealand’s independent, non-profit online safety organisation.  Mr Melhuish will talk about a range of topics including Netsafe’s role as a regulator (regarding complaints of online harms) and its response to the recent tragic events in Christchurch.

In 2016 Netsafe was appointed to operate civil reporting via New Zealand’s Harmful Digital Communications Act which aims to prevent and reduce the impact of online bullying, harassment, revenge porn and other forms of abuse and intimidation.

This visit is facilitated by the UK Safer Internet Centre (UKSIC), which works in close partnership with Netsafe and is also a key partner to the Scottish Government’s National Action Plan on Internet Safety for Children and Young People.  David Wright, Director UKSIC and Jess McBeath will present about the Centre’s work.  They will also talk about the UK Government’s Online Harms White Paper and proposals to establish in law a new duty of care towards users, overseen by an independent regulator.
