Blades Beyond the Binary

Blades Beyond the Binary

Swords are for everyone

Monday July 1st – Wednesday July 31st 2019
Kennington Park Community Centre

Event description

As part of Pride month London Historical Fencing Club are opening up several spots across all our classes for trans, intersex and non-binary people to come try out historical fencing. We recognise that these groups can find new an unknown sports environments unwelcoming. As an established club with several trans members already, we are running this campaign to help lower the barrier to entry into the sport we love.

Historical fencing or Historical European Martial Arts (HEMA) is a relatively new sport with an old history. We train using several different weapons and sword fighting styles, with everything we learn being taken from historical texts that described how to fight with a sword. The historical sources which form the basis of our teaching range from the high medieval period (early 15th Century), through the renaissance and into the early modern sources (18th century)

We are opening free slots for any of our classes in July. Because of space limits, you will need to select 1 from the 4 classes we offer. You can choose any session to be your first, and after that, if you like what you find, you will be very welcome to keep coming back as part of our regular class.

**PLEASE NOTE THAT CLASSES START AT DIFFERENT TIMES**

Monday Longsword - 7 to 9 pm

Monday Smallsword - 8 to 10 pm

Wednesday Longsword - 8:15 to 10:15 pm

Wednesday Rapier - 8:15 to 10:15 pm
