Caar (Children, Adolescents, and Animals Research) is a specialist research group within the Centre for Applied Developmental Psychology in the School of Health in Social Science, University of Edinburgh. We work closely with the Scottish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SSPCA) and other animal welfare organisations.

The first of our 2020 series of reflective workshops will highlight different approaches to listening to children’s voices, considering how this might be best achieved in the sensitive realm of animal cruelty. We will discuss findings from our own work, recent research and practice, to examine how trauma-informed approaches help children to share their experiences.

Our workshops are specifically aimed at practitioners/professionals involved with child and/or animal welfare (animal welfare education, science education, teaching, social work, social care, police, juvenile justice, health). This workshop is also suitable for researchers/students working with children (especially in the area of ACES (adverse childhood experiences) or cruelty). It will be held at the University of Edinburgh from 2 – 4pm.
