ScotPEN Wellcome Engagement Award (SWEA) Inclusive Engagement Workshop, presented by Dr Jane Essex

Open to applicants to the ScotPEN Wellcome Engagement Award, Public Engagement Professionals and researchers wishing to develop skills in public engagement. The workshop will consider the multiple barriers that learners with Additional Support Needs (ASN) face in engaging with STEM outreach, with an especial focus on those with learning difficulties. It will also address the considerations that researchers and science communicators need to factor in when planning inclusive STEM events. Participants will also be shown the many benefits to them of opening up outreach to all learners. The workshop draws on the presenter’s extensive experience in delivering inclusive STEM outreach and research findings that can help to inform practice. Jane will briefly share a few examples of her own work, to illustrate the principles that she will share, and there will be opportunities for participants to evaluate, and if appropriate adjust, outreach activities so that they will be more accessible to a far wider range of learners.
