Compère - Alex Townsend-Drake - 
 

Alex will be hosting the day with a wealth of knowledge, having previously held responsibility for coordinating a complex portfolio of work on behalf of the London Resilience Partnership, including CBRN(e) and mass fatality planning. He retains an on-call role as a Strategic Advisor which has involved planning for major events and the response to regional incidents such as the Westminster, London Bridge, and Finsbury Park Attacks; Grenfell Tower Fire; and COVID-19 Pandemic. Alex otherwise holds a Master’s Degree in Conflict, Security and Development from Kings College London and a Professional Diploma in Strategic Leadership in the Global Societal Security Environment from the Swedish Defence University.

Andrew Donaldson CSyP FSyI  & Steven McGrath MSyI - The Heads of the Hydra: Al Qaeda’s Evolution, the Development of the Terrorist Threat, and of our Protection.
 

Andrew is a Chartered Security Professional, Fellow of the Security Institute and Co-Chair of our Counter Terrorism Special Interest Group.  He is currently Head of Security for REM (UK) Ltd, responsible for security policy, strategy and crisis management corporately and across the portfolio of assets, including The Shard.  Prior to this he had a distinguished career in international counter terrorism. 

Steven is currently Head of Security for Wembley Stadium, responsible for security policy, strategy, crisis management and asset protection. Prior to this he had a distinguished career in counter terrorism as a Regional Protect & Prepare lead and with the National Counter Terrorism Security Office. As Head of NaCTSO Information Capability & Engagement, Steve was responsible for ACT e-learning, the ACT app and Business Engagement. He is a Co-Chair of our Counter Terrorism Special Interest Group.  

This session considers how al Qaeda’s evolution contributed to the development of terrorism, focusing on their growth to the emergence of Daesh, and their influence on other terrorist ideologies.  It also considers how our protection has changed to mitigate the threats, focusing on establishing a resilient future. 

David BaMaung CSyP - From the Inside Out - Understanding the Insider Threat
 
David is Managing Director of Able Security, specialising in personnel and protective security. He was accepted onto the Register of Chartered Security Professionals in 2013. David served within law enforcement for almost 40 years and was a CTSA (Counter Terrorism Security Advisor) supervisor. Most recently, he served as a Security Expert to the Manchester Arena Inquiry. He is an Honorary Professor with Glasgow Caledonian University and a Principal Member of the RSES.

David's presentation explores the threat from which an insider activity can compromise all aspects of an organisation’s security. This issue is especially relevant with the current threats from hostile state actors and espionage activity, and must be addressed. Everyone has a role in protecting against this threat.

Mike Croll MSyI - The All-Seeing Eye

Mike has held some of the most senior appointments in international security management including Head of Overseas Security at the FCO, Head of Security for EU Delegations world-wide, Director of UN Security Operations, Facebook’s Head of Security for EMEA. He has also been a diplomat, a Bomb Disposal Officer and a uniformed security guard at a supermarket.

His presentation "The All-Seeing Eye" is about surveillance, including crime prevention through environmental design (CPTED), the evolution of CCTV, dataveillance, and the new realm of physiological surveillance. It considers how new technology is shaping the business of security.

Miriam Stone - Lessons Learnt and Their Real-life Impact on Event Practice 
 
Miriam has worked in the events industry all her life, starting out as a technician for Hounslow Council.  She has been an Events Manager since 1997 and at the AO Arena since 2006.  Having worked on events as diverse as the Urban Farm Show to World Championship Boxing, her hands on experience of events, event management and crowd behavior is vast.  Miriam was the Duty Manager on the night of the terrorist attack at Manchester Arena in 2017.

Following on from previous talk on the experience of Duty Managing during a major incident and the control room actions on the night, I am planning to recap that night and discuss in more detail how my own personal lessons learned have influenced have been used to mentor new Events Managers in the organisation.  That those experiences become part of the collective conscience and that the lessons must be retained and not lost in the varied responsibilities and workings of the Event Management team.

Charlie Curry MSyI - Public & Private Collaboration

Charlie is the Head of Security & Investigations for the Home Office.  He also leads the Government’s Protective Security Centre, which delivers services and consultancy to drive down physical and personnel security risks across government.  He was previously the senior security adviser for the Department for Business & Energy and joined government from a background in overseas security, the financial sector and the military.

Charlie’s presentation explores the common themes that both public and private sector face.  It will consider where collaboration might help and where it might hinder.  And it will invite discussion on what our current mechanisms for talking to each other are, and what more we might want to do.
