Caar (Children, Adolescents, and Animals Research) is a specialist research group within the Centre for Applied Developmental Psychology in the School of Health in Social Science, University of Edinburgh. We work closely with the Scottish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SSPCA).
The second in our series of reflective
workshops in 2019 will focus on the work we have undertaken in collaboration with the Scottish SPCA in order to prevent animal cruelty. We will focus on research evidence from our recent targeted intervention, ‘Animal Guardians’, designed for children who require additional support to build
empathy towards animals. Daniel Tipping, from the Edinburgh Dog and Cat Home (a charity working in partnership with the council and police services in order to welcome and re-home lost and abandoned pets) will also talk about their new education programme for children. Their website is: https://www.edch.org.uk/
Our workshops are specifically aimed at practitioners/professionals
involved with child and/or animal welfare (animal welfare education, science
education, teaching, social work, social care, police, juvenile justice,
health). These will be held at the University of Edinburgh from 2 – 4.30pm.
The workshop format will comprise an introduction to our work, brief summaries of key findings, and focused opportunities to discuss and reflect on personal experience and the practical relevance of the research. It will conclude with a summary of key learning points/implications.
